Motherhood is a journey filled with immeasurable love, tireless dedication, and, often, self-sacrifice. For years, I poured all my energy into caring for my family, leaving little room for myself. As a result, I found myself carrying the weight of neglect, both physically and emotionally. But determined to reclaim my health and vitality, I embarked on a journey of self-prioritization that transformed my body and my entire life.
At the age of 53, after years of neglecting my well-being, I made the courageous decision to show up for myself and shed the weight I had put on over ten years. This was not about quick fixes or drastic measures but about embracing a holistic approach to wellness that honored my body and soul. As I embarked on this journey, little did I know that it would become the greatest gift I could ever give myself – health and vibrant living.
One of the key components of my journey was joyful movement…
Instead of viewing exercise as a chore, I sought activities that brought joy and physically challenged me. Whether dancing, Pilates, or walking by the ocean, I discovered a newfound appreciation for movement that nourished my body and soul. Through this, I shed pounds and found new friendships and connections with like-minded individuals who shared my passion for an active lifestyle.
In my quest for health, I shifted my mindset around food. Instead of restriction, I focused on nourishment, filling my plate with wholesome, nutrient-dense foods that fueled my body. I educated myself through books, podcasts, and mentors, understanding the connection between food and overall well-being.
Another transformative aspect of my journey was the intentional decluttering of my life…
I cleared out physical clutter from my home, creating a peaceful space. I embraced meditation, breathwork, and journaling as tools for inner exploration and self-discovery. My journey went beyond physical transformation; it was about finding passion and purpose in every aspect of my life. I leaned into my love for photography and eventually decided to change careers, studying holistic nutrition to align my professional endeavors with my values. This shift not only fueled my growth but also allowed me to inspire others to prioritize their health and well-being.
As Mother’s Day approaches, I am grateful for the gift of health and vitality that I’ve given myself. As I live a vibrant life filled with love, purpose, and joy, I am reminded that self-prioritization is not selfish but essential. My journey is a testament to the power of embracing health and wellness at any age, and I am committed to helping other midlife women find their path to vibrant living through my program, The Midlife Makeover, Reclaiming Health, and Happiness.
Furthermore, I’ve realized that I have become a better mom by prioritizing my own well-being. As a healthier version of myself, I have more energy, patience, and presence to devote to my family. My health journey has not only transformed my own life but has also positively impacted the lives of those closest to me.
By prioritizing self-care, I’ve shown my children the importance of nurturing oneself and living a balanced, fulfilling life. I’ve taught them that putting themselves first and prioritizing their well-being is okay. And most importantly, I’ve demonstrated that true love and care for others begin with love and care for oneself.
So, as I celebrate Mother’s Day this year, I do so with a heart full of gratitude for the journey that has brought me to where I am today. I do so with a renewed commitment to continue prioritizing my health and well-being for myself and the ones I love. Because ultimately, being a better mom starts with being a healthier, happier me.
